Invertebrates have an important role in biomedical research. THey are relatively easy to maintain, less expensive and less labor intensive than more traditional laboratory animals. Use of invertebrates in research is considered a replacement and a refinement alternative to the use of vertebrates. The use of invertebrates as alternatives assists researchers to meet the policies, guidelines and laws regarding animal welfare.
